Urbino among artists and gold sculptures
Art and gold will be the main players until 8th September 2019 at the Marche National Gallery in Urbino where, with the exhibition entitled “Golden Sculpture”, curated by Paola Stroppiana, some extraordinary 20th century creations by some of the greatest artists of the time will be on display. Works that are based on sculpture and that explore the jewellery world with style, originality and innovation all at the same time.
As in the case of Dalì’s “The persistence of sound”, two earrings that recall the shape of the telephone receiver, or the “Flower Head Piece” diadem by Alexander Calder, an artist famous for his kinetic art sculptures hanging from the ceiling; a jewel-sculpture consisting of a flower with petals forming a stylized corolla.
And the “Brooch” by futurist Gino Severini, representing dynamism, speed and shapes in transformation with gold, rubies, sapphires, emeralds and diamonds, or “Helena”, a series of jewels by Georges Braque with turquoise, enamels and brilliant-cut diamonds, and a brooch that takes on the look of a female face. And “Horse and rider with Phrygian cap” by Giorgio De Chirico, a reproduction in jewel form of a sculpture representing a knight wearing a Phrygian cap on his horse. Then Gio’ Pomodoro, with his red and white gold necklace, amid emeralds and rubies, and his brother-in-law, Arnaldo – who conducted a lot of research in jewellery art, with his pink gold, ruby and geode brooch.
Room has also been given to Fontana with his “Spatial Concept”, a gold bracelet that returns to the artist’s much-loved theme of the egg, and the Meteor pendant necklace by Umberto Mastroianni or the “Optic Topic” by Man Ray, a gold-plated silver mask that was made as a pair of sunglasses together with jeweller Gian Carlo Montebello.
Lastly, Picasso astounds with the display of his “Visage de Faune” on a medallion: the face of a fawn that often appeared in his art, here in a 23-carat version.
